Why I walk....my Dad.
My Dad became a fireman of the South Line volunteer fire company of Cheektowaga in October of 1976 (when I was 2). He spent 8 years as an Engine Captain, joined the ranks of Fire Police in 2004, and was elected one of the company's Fire Commissioners in 2005. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 2025 and made the decision to not seek re-election as Fire Commissioner. He is being treated at Roswell and is doing as well as can be expected. My Dad earned the "firefighter of the year" award (he said sometime in the 80's...he can't remember exactly) and continues to answer calls still today and is at 15,700 calls and counting!
