U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) was created in 2003 as part of the Department of Homeland Security, a new agency established by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 in direct response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. CBP operates as the largest federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, tasked with securing the nation’s borders and ports of entry while enabling legitimate commerce and travel.
